Our Favourite 4 Beaches near Babbacombe

Not far from the bright lights of Torquay, the beautiful English Riviera has a host of secluded coves and stunning beaches just waiting to be explored. There’s nowhere better to spend a day soaking up the sand and sea than one of the beaches in Babbacombe.

The popular year-round resort town of Babbacombe has everything you need for a fun-filled day by the sea. The UNESCO Global Geopark area holds a unique and impressive natural environment with plenty of secluded beaches and spectacular sights to uncover and explore.

We’ve rounded up four of our favourite beaches in Babbacombe. Each has a unique charm of its own, and they’re all within walking distance of the Cary Arms. Grab your deckchair and head out to one of these idyllic spots.

Babbacombe Beach

A mere 2-minute walk from our lovely inn on the beach is one of Devon’s most pleasant crescent of sand and shingle. Babbacombe Beach is backed by wooded cliffs, dotted with villas reminiscent of the 1930s. It’s a little further from the promenade, so often quieter but with fewer on-site amenities.

There are, however, plenty of rockpools for little ones to explore and a small stone breakwater that makes for the ideal sea fishing spot.  Babbacombe is also a popular diving spot - the sheltered bay and beautifully clear waters make it a safer place for beginners to give it a go. Dogs are welcome on the beach year round.

Oddicombe Beach

Family-friendly beaches near Babbacombe don’t come any better than Oddicombe. Backed by high, red cliffs, the steep(ish) winding road to the beautifully clear waters is an adventure in itself. It’s a lovely, tree-lined route down - and you don’t even have to worry about climbing the hill home - a gorgeous 1920s-style Cliff Railway will bring you back up without a sweat.

Oddicombe is a sand and shingle beach with striking red sands and a unique charm of its own – better yet it’s only a 15-minute walk from the Cary Arms. The English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark site is sheltered from most winds by the high cliffs. With safe swimming and beautiful waters, it’s the perfect spot for a splash. Hire a pedalo or kayak to get out on the water or a round of deckchairs to relax in comfort.

Anstey’s Cove

For something a little more rugged, try Anstey’s Cove. Said to be a favourite of famed author Agatha Christie, the cove is easily accessible via a 30-minute walk from us. Backed by a wooded hillside, this small stretch of shingle boasts a quiet and peaceful atmosphere with deep blue waters, making it ones our favourite beaches near Babbacombe. There are unique rock formations and beautiful limestone cliffs with views across Lyme Bay. All tucked away from the wind and most of the crowds.

There’s a cafe on the beach serving up coffees, lunches and light bites in the warmer months with seating spilling out onto the beach itself. The sheltered cove is a great spot for swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking - although there is no active lifeguard at Anstey’s Cove.

Meadfoot Beach

The last of our beaches near Babbacombe boasts Blue Flag status, guaranteeing exceptional water quality and safety. You can easily reach its shimmering blue waters and sandy shores with a 45-minute walk from our doorstep. Meadfoot Beach delivers the essence of the English Riviera, with beach huts lining the foot of the imposing cliffs. A stunning spot to unwind and relax.

This is the perfect place to set up a deckchair and unwind to the sounds of the sea. Wander the promenade, lined with beach chalets. Grab a drink and a bite to eat at the popular beach cafe. Take in views of Thatcher Rock and beyond.

Our one note is that Meadfoot Beach is tidal, so make sure to time your trip for low tide.

And connecting them all, the South West Coastal Path

Described by Lonely Planet as ‘walking at its most diverse, most spectacular and most delicious’, the renowned route is the longest National Trail in the UK. A magnet for hikers and long-distance walkers across Europe.

While you could take on the full 630 miles through Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and Dorset, there are plenty of short sections to enjoy. In fact, the South West Coastal Path links together the four beaches above. Imagine a blissful day wandering trails and sandy shores with a blend of calm coastal views and lively seaside resort towns. Perfection.
