Many of the region's sandiest beaches are easily accessible, and several have the blue flag and seaside award status.

Some of the best beaches in Devon can be found in the South Devon National Landscape, a protected area covering 60 miles of spectacularly stunning coastline, estuaries and countryside between Brixham and Plymouth.

Blackpool Sands Beach

Situated near Dartmouth within the South Devon National Landscape, this large pebble and shingle beach is widely regarded as one of the best beaches in Devon. Backed by a dense forest of pine trees, this blue flag beach offers the perfect escape.

The calm waters are ideal for swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding. You can hire kayaks and paddleboards and, if you have your own board, there’s a SUP inflation station at the beach. A beach sauna provides the ideal spot to warm up after a bracing dip.

There’s plenty of parking, lifeguards, excellent facilities, including an on-the-beach cafe. Dogs aren’t allowed on the beach between April and September.

Bantham Beach

One of Devon’s most beautiful beaches, this unspoiled location is a must-visit. Located in the South Hams District and within the South Devon National Landscape, Bantham is famed for its sweeping sands and showstopping scenery.

At low tide, the sandy beach is filled with rock pools, providing endless entertainment for little ones and nature lovers. The consistent waves make Bantham a popular surfing destination for all levels.

There is a car park, lifeguards during the summer months, and toilets. Dogs aren’t allowed on the main beach between May and September, but are allowed on the estuary side year-round.

Dawlish Warren Beach

With one and a half miles of pristine sand backed by dunes, refreshingly clean water and plenty of attractions, Dawlish Warren is one of the most popular beaches in Devon.

An archetypal British Beach, Dawlish Warren has something for everyone. The beach gets busy in the summer months, but you can rent a beach hut for a little seclusion. Beyond the beach are amusements, attractions and a host of eateries - fish and chips on the beach is a must!

There’s plenty of parking, lifeguards and excellent facilities. Dogs are welcome on parts of the beach year-round.

Hope Cove

Nestled between Salcombe and Thurlestone in the South Devon National Landscape, Hope Cove consists of two sandy beaches, Inner Hope and Outer Hope. This beautifully secluded cove can be reached via the South West Coastal Path or a short drive from Kingsbridge.

Perfect for sunbathing, photography and swimming in the clear water, Hope Cove is an excellent destination for families, couples and groups of friends.

There are lifeguards during the summer months, toilets, a beachside bar and restaurant and shops. Dogs are allowed year-round, making this one of the best dog-friendly beaches in Devon.

Slapton Sands Beach

The name is a little misleading as Slapton is a shingle and pebble beach, but don’t let that put you off. This 3-mile stretch is one of Devon’s prettiest beaches. Perfect for families and friends, the water is calm and safe.

Located in the South Devon National Landscape. Slapton Sands is close to the Slapton Ley Nature Reserve, making it the perfect spot for nature watching.

Expect lifeguards in the summer months, a beachside cafe and excellent facilities. Dogs are welcome on the beach all year.
